Kundli matching (Guna Milan) calculator
Kundli matching (Guna Milan, or Ashtakoota) compares the Moons of two birth charts across eight kootas worth 36 points: Varna 1, Vashya 2, Tara 3, Yoni 4, Graha Maitri 5, Gana 6, Bhakoot 7 and Nadi 8. Tradition asks for at least 18; 25 or more is considered a very good match. It needs each person’s date, time and place of birth.
The tables this calculator uses
Every score above comes from these. Bride’s value down the side, groom’s across the top where the table is directional.
| Varna | Vashya | Sign lord | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Aries (Mesha) | Kshatriya | Chatushpada | Mars |
| Taurus (Vrishabha) | Vaishya | Chatushpada | Venus |
| Gemini (Mithuna) | Shudra | Manava | Mercury |
| Cancer (Karka) | Brahmin | Jalachara | Moon |
| Leo (Simha) | Kshatriya | Vanachara | Sun |
| Virgo (Kanya) | Vaishya | Manava | Mercury |
| Libra (Tula) | Shudra | Manava | Venus |
| Scorpio (Vrishchika) | Brahmin | Keeta | Mars |
| Sagittarius (Dhanu) | Kshatriya | Manava to 15°, then Chatushpada | Jupiter |
| Capricorn (Makara) | Vaishya | Chatushpada to 15°, then Jalachara | Saturn |
| Aquarius (Kumbha) | Shudra | Manava | Saturn |
| Pisces (Meena) | Brahmin | Jalachara | Jupiter |
Varna scores 1 when the groom’s varna is the same as or higher than the bride’s (Brahmin, Kshatriya, Vaishya, Shudra).
| Chatushpada | Manava | Jalachara | Vanachara | Keeta | |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Chatushpada | 2 | 1 | 1 | 1.5 | 1 |
| Manava | 1 | 2 | 1.5 | 0 | 1 |
| Jalachara | 1 | 1.5 | 2 | 1 | 1 |
| Vanachara | 0 | 0 | 0 | 2 | 0 |
| Keeta | 1 | 1 | 1 | 0 | 2 |
Tara
Count from the bride’s nakshatra to the groom’s, and back, and take each count’s remainder after dividing by 9. A remainder of 3, 5 or 7 (Vipat, Pratyak, Naidhana) is inauspicious. Both auspicious: 3 points; one: 1.5; neither: 0.

From each lord’s natural friendship with the other (Brihat Parashara Hora Shastra): both friends 5; friend and neutral 4; both neutral 3; friend and enemy 1; neutral and enemy ½; both enemies 0.
Gana, Bhakoot and Nadi
Gana: the same gana 6; Deva with Manushya 5; Manushya with Rakshasa 1; Deva with Rakshasa 0. Some schools score the cross pairs by who is the bride; this calculator uses the common symmetric table.
Bhakoot: 7 points unless the Moon signs are 2/12, 5/9 or 6/8 from each other — Bhakoot dosha, 0. Nadi: 8 points unless both nakshatras share a nadi — Nadi dosha, 0. Classical exceptions can cancel either dosha; the calculator shows the plain score.
How it is calculated
- Each birth is converted to UTC with the birthplace’s time-zone history, and the Moon’s sidereal (Lahiri) longitude is computed for that instant — the same method as the Moon sign calculator.
- From each Moon: the nakshatra (for Tara, Yoni, Gana and Nadi), the sign (for Varna, Bhakoot and the sign lord of Graha Maitri) and the Vashya group, which for Sagittarius and Capricorn depends on which half of the sign the Moon is in.
- Each koota is scored from its classical table — all of them are printed below the calculator — and the eight are added.
- Nadi dosha (the same nadi, 0 of 8) and Bhakoot dosha (Moon signs 2/12, 5/9 or 6/8 apart, 0 of 7) are flagged.
Schools differ in a few places — the Gana cross scores, and the exceptions that cancel Nadi or Bhakoot dosha — and the page says which choice it makes. Guna Milan reads only the two Moons; a full compatibility reading also weighs Mangal dosha, the seventh house and both whole charts. Nothing you enter leaves your browser.
Questions
How many gunas are needed for marriage?
Tradition sets the minimum at 18 of 36. 18–24 is considered average, 25–32 very good and 33–36 excellent — though a score is weighed together with the doshas and the full charts, not on its own.
What is Nadi dosha?
Both partners’ Moons in nakshatras of the same nadi (Adi, Madhya or Antya), which scores 0 of Nadi’s 8 points. It is the most heavily weighted koota; classical texts give exceptions, for example when both Moons are in the same sign but different nakshatras.
What is Bhakoot dosha?
The two Moon signs 2/12, 5/9 or 6/8 from each other, which scores 0 of Bhakoot’s 7 points. It is traditionally cancelled when the two sign lords are the same planet or friends.
Can kundli matching be done by name?
Name matching uses the naming syllable to guess a nakshatra, and is only an approximation. Matching by date, time and place of birth uses the actual position of each Moon.
Why does a birth time matter?
The Moon crosses a nakshatra in about a day and a sign in two and a half, so on some dates the nakshatra — and several kootas with it — depends on the hour. Without a time the calculator warns you when that is the case.
In Plutto
A calculator gives one number. Plutto reads your whole chart — numerology beside Vedic, Western and Chinese astrology — and lets you ask it about the result, out loud. Background: the guide.
